The 4 most important characteristics I look for are the following
- A person's character/integrity
- Are they dependable/Responsible
- And of course their experience with dogs and passion for them.
I wasn't going to write about this latest experience I had interviewing a potential dog walker but decided it was time to say how I feel about the challenges of hiring in today's world.
A young woman applied for a dog walking job with my company in fact she came recommended from a former employee. She had her first phone interview in which I wasn't entirely impressed but thought she was young so okay I will interview her face to face, she just doesn't have the experience yet.
At the face to face interview she was sweet enough, didn't dress professionally and even swore a little bit...sigh... I thought okay maybe she could be trained. She just is nervous.
At the last stage of the interview process where she walked along with one of our walkers, she was late, saying she had to run an errand and that she will let the dog walker know when she can meet her. Um....not okay .
After a very direct email letting her know that this was not okay and then letting her know she will not be working for us and thanking her for her time and wishing her the best of luck I received a nasty message from her mother. I was called unprofessional and cold hearted for being direct with her daughter as to why she wasn't hired.
She insulted me personally and she insulted my business, all this because her daughter didn't get a job with us.
No dog walking isn't rocket science as this disgruntled mother so sarcastically put in her message to me, but the job of caring for people's homes and pets is a serious business. I will continue to have high standards for my company and the people who work for Housebound Hounds.
A proud, professional and warm hearted business owner!
